Premier promotes Yukoners’ interests at national meetings

WHITEHORSE – Over the next week, Premier Dennis Fentie will attend the Finance Ministers’ Meeting in Charlottetown and the Western Premiers’ Conference in Vancouver.

“These meetings provide premiers and ministers with the opportunity for face to face discussions about issues that are of common interest and importance,” Fentie said. “I am committed to working with my provincial and territorial colleagues to ensure long-term economic success for the benefit of Yukoners.”

Co-hosted by federal Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty and Prince Edward Island Premier Robert Ghiz, the Finance Ministers’ Meeting is on June 13 and 14 and will be attended by provincial and territorial finance ministers.

“As well as meeting with the Bank of Canada governor, we will be holding discussions on our respective economic and fiscal situations, the Canadian retirement income system and lessons learned from the economic downturn,” Fentie said.

The 2010 Western Premiers’ Conference, hosted by BC Premier Gordon Campbell, is on June 15 and 16. Topics on the agenda include the economy, clean energy and climate change, Aboriginal education, the sustainability of health care funding and water policy. The premiers will also meet with US and Canadian ambassadors and the Western Governors’ Association chair Brian Schweitzer to discuss Canada–US relations.

“As the lead on behalf of the three territories on water and health care funding, I am particularly looking forward to discussions on these important topics,” Fentie said.

The Western Premiers’ Conference is attended by premiers and officials from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Last year, Yukon hosted the conference in Dawson City.
