Students recognize teachers for making a difference

WHITEHORSE – Yukon students will again have an opportunity to tell their teachers what they really think, as part of the Teachers Make a Difference contest.

“This campaign provides students with an excellent opportunity to reflect on how an educator has made a difference in their school life,” Education Minister Patrick Rouble said. “The contest underlines the importance of recognizing the invaluable contribution of educators to the success of students and the education system. Educators play a vital role in preparing Yukoners for Yukon opportunities.”

The campaign, initiated by the Yukon Teachers’ Association (YTA) and sponsored by the Department of Education, Air North and CKRW radio, aims to celebrate current Yukon educators and promote reflection among students on how a teacher made or is making a difference in their school life. Students can enter by writing a paragraph or two about any current educator who has made a difference to them.

“I am really looking forward to reading various student entries. Last year some of the entries at our schools were very funny, while others were heartfelt and serious,” YTA president Katherine Mackwood said. “They were all inspirational, encouraging educators to keep up the good work.”

During Education Week, each school will hold a random draw on April 14 for a 2 GB MP3 player for the winning student entry and a $100 gift certificate for the winning educator.

All entries are also eligible for the grand prize draws, which will be held April 24 at the YTA Annual General Meeting. Entries will be placed in Whitehorse and rural community categories. The two students whose winning entries are drawn will each win a laptop computer donated by the Education department. The educators will each win a pair of tickets donated by Air North, to any destination it flies.

Deadline for submissions is April 9.
