Deputy Premier Takes Northern Perspective to Global Climate Summit

WHITEHORSE – Deputy Premier Elaine Taylor is taking Yukon’s perspective on climate change to the second Governors’ Global Climate Summit in Los Angles.

Representatives from every state as well as regional leaders from other countries have been invited to the September 30 to October 2 summit hosted by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Discussions will range from adaptation, youth leadership and the evolution of the carbon economy to managing water resources in a changing climate.

“Yukon is closely linked to national and international climate change action and is fully engaged in building strong partnerships at this year’s summit in Los Angeles,” Taylor said. “Our participation in this event will solidify existing partnerships and effectively guide our path forward as we move closer to the global negotiations taking place in Copenhagen this December.”

The deputy premier will be speaking to the Yukon government’s commitment to climate change action and the experiences already felt in the North regarding climate change impacts.

The event is intended to showcase actions and ideas that local governments are pursuing to combat climate change and builds upon the work of The Climate Group, comprising over 30 sub-national governments, including Yukon, that are working as a collective to reduce emissions through energy efficiency, renewable energy and other initiatives.
