$70,000 in Yukon High Performance Sports Grants Awarded
WHITEHORSE – High performance athletes and one official will receive $70,000 in funding in 2009-10 through the Yukon High Performance Assistance Program (YHPAP), Community Services Minister Archie Lang announced today at an awards ceremony.
“This funding helps develop Yukon’s high performance athletes and officials,” Lang said. “While many of our programs help Yukoners as a whole participate in sport and recreation, this program specifically assists some of our most talented and dedicated athletes and coaches achieve excellence in their sports. These athletes and officials represent Yukon at national and international competitions; they also inspire Yukon youth and athletes of all ages.”
The program provides varying amounts of funding to Yukon athletes who have either performed well or demonstrated potential at provincial, western Canadian, national, or international events. Twenty athletes will be funded through this program in 2009-10.
Officials also receive assistance through the program to upgrade their skills and certification. One high level official was funded under this program.
Grants are determined by a jury drawn from the sport community and the Yukon government. Funding is provided jointly by Community Services and the Yukon Lottery Commission. The $70,000 was allocated to this program on the recommendation of the Yukon Recreation Advisory Committee.
