First Nation of Nacho N’yak Dun and Government of Yukon Sign Accord

MAYO - Government of Yukon Premier Dennis Fentie and First Nation of Nacho N’yak Dun Chief Simon Mervyn today signed an Intergovernmental Relations Accord at the Nacho N’yak Dun General Assembly in Mayo.

“Through this accord we are agreeing to work together on areas that both our governments see as priorities: working toward cooperative delivery of health and social services programs, collaborating on land and resource management activities and creating capacity building opportunities with regard to employment and economic opportunities,” Fentie said.

Chief Mervyn said, “Our mandate is to provide good governance to our people. Over the last number of years, we have done studies which have identified gaps in program and service delivery and have made best efforts to engage in the planning and permitting processes in place for land and resource management. This accord will assist us to respond effectively to economic opportunities.”

The accord sets the stage for an enhanced working relationship between Yukon government and the First Nation of Nacho N’yak Dun. It recognizes that the two governments share many concerns and interests, and that both governments wish to develop practical ways to work together in the efficient and effective delivery of services to their citizens.

“The signing of this accord will bring the best of Nacho N’yak Dun and Yukon government together to provide collectively for our people and to create a brighter future for our youth and people who are hurting,” Mervyn said.

“We are committed to an open, respectful working relationship with Nacho N’yak Dun and look forward to moving forward on the priorities set out in this accord,” Fentie said.
