Over Nine-Hundred Thousand in Sport and Recreation Grants Awarded
WHITEHORSE – Community Services Minister Archie Lang today announced $907,250 in Yukon Recreation Advisory Committee (YRAC) grants are being awarded to Yukon sport and recreation groups for 2009-10.
“Annual YRAC funding to Yukon-wide sport and recreation organizations helps to support both healthy living programs and the efforts of thousands of volunteers who help to deliver sport and recreation programs across the territory,” Lang said. “The dedication and commitment of our volunteers, coaches and sporting officials create remarkable opportunities for our athletes and all Yukoners who strive to achieve their goals and to enjoy physically active lifestyles.”
Twenty-seven sport governing bodies will receive $515,250 and seven recreation groups will receive $192,000. The High Performance Athlete and Official
Program will receive $70,000 and $130,000 will be allocated to Sport Yukon to support its core operations and program delivery.
“YRAC reviews applications from Yukon sport organizations on an annual basis,” YRAC Chair Geoff Scherer said. “The organizations we recommend to receive funding do outstanding work through their programs, which help improve our quality of life and provide numerous sports and recreation opportunities for youth and Yukoners of all ages.”
Funding for the annual YRAC grants is made possible by a revenue sharing agreement between the Yukon Lottery Commission and the Government of Yukon. The grants are adjudicated by the Yukon Recreation Advisory Committee and administered by the Department of Community Services’ Sport and Recreation branch.
