Yukon Businesses Promoted at Meet the North in Edmonton
WHITEHORSE – Meet the North 2009 gets underway today in Edmonton. The three-day conference and tradeshow promotes Yukon to hundreds of delegates as a great place to invest and do business. Yukon, Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut are participating in this event.
“Yukon government is stimulating the development of the economy by assisting small and medium size business to penetrate export markets, foster business and investment partnerships, and promote increased awareness of the Yukon advantage,” Premier Dennis Fentie said. “We are promoting economic sustainability and diversification in Yukon through events and initiatives like Meet the North.”
The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Going Global’ and includes representatives from industry and government, including the Right Honourable Joe Clark, former Prime Minister of Canada. Speakers will talk about the global economy, research and innovation, and environmental challenges and opportunities.
Northern businesses and governments are on display for the tradeshow portion of the conference and Yukon will showcase a cross-section of made-in-Yukon products and services, as well as examples of successful Yukon entrepreneurship.
“These businesses are looking to break into new markets,” Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon said. “Our strategy is to encourage export growth and business expansion at this event.”
The Department of Economic Development partnered with the Yukon Chamber of Commerce to organize Yukon’s presence at the tradeshow. Various Yukon businesses attending Meet the North were supported through the department’s Enterprise Trade Fund (ETF). The ETF is designed to stimulate and support the growth of Yukon business activity through market penetration and expansion, and business development.
The conference and tradeshow concludes May 14 and is attended by representatives from Yukon government’s Department of Economic Development, the Yukon Chamber of Commerce, Yukon businesses, as well as businesses and industry associations from across northern and western Canada.
