Major Mine Moves Closer to Production

WHITEHORSE – A major mining initiative in the southeast Yukon recently moved one step closer to starting production.

Yukon Zinc’s Wolverine project’s ‘Tailings and Infrastructure Design and Construction Plan’ was recently approved by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. The plan presents a detailed design of the tailings storage facility for the underground zinc-silver mine located 180 km southeast of Ross River, in the Finlayson mining district.

“Yukon Zinc is now in a position to proceed with further implementing its development plans for the Wolverine project,” Brad Cathers, Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources, said. “This is a tangible example of how Yukon’s regulatory regime enables the development and management of Yukon’s natural resources in a responsible and sustainable manner.”

As the Wolverine project proceeds through the Yukon government regulatory approval process, Yukon Zinc Corporation (YZC) anticipates pursuing the bulk of infrastructure construction activities in 2009 with production anticipated to start in mid-2010.

“Yukon Zinc Corporation is committed to the development of an environmentally and socially responsible project which optimizes benefits to the Yukon Territory and its people,” Pamela Ladyman, YZC vice president of Environment and Community Affairs, said. “Yukon Zinc appreciates the contributions and support of Yukon government agencies, the Kaska First Nations and stakeholders through all aspects of the regulatory process.”

To date, YZC has completed road access, bridge building, the installation of a new permanent camp facility and diversion ditches, and the removal of organic material in preparation of bulk earthworks this spring. All major permits including the Quartz Mining and Type A water licences have been issued for this project.

YZC is a Canadian metal exploration and mine development company based in Vancouver, British Columbia. It is focused on development of the Wolverine project and its exploration land holdings in Yukon’s Finlayson and Rancheria Districts.
