WHITEHORSE – Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources Brad Cathers today announced an additional $50,000 for the Land Planning branch to increase community land planning initiatives. This 2009/10 budget allocation, pending legislative approval, is in addition to the Land Planning branch’s previous operational budget.
“Increased funding for community land planning will support an enhanced focus on developing local area plans for unincorporated communities and rural areas,” Cathers said. “In particular, efforts will target areas not covered by zoning regulations.”
Community land planning is carried out by the Land Planning branch for unincorporated communities and rural areas outside of municipalities. Local area plans are developed in consultation with residents, First Nations and area user groups to guide development and land use for the particular area. Local area plans guide land management decisions, including zoning regulations and future developments.
On April 1 the Land Planning branch moved from the Department of Community Services to the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources in the Elijah Smith Building, Suite 320 at 300 Main Street. Combining land programs together under one roof will provide Yukoners with one convenient location for land-related business.
