Education Minister Establishes Student Advisory Council

WHITEHORSE – A Student Advisory Council has been established by Education Minister Patrick Rouble.

“The Student Advisory Council will provide a forum for students to offer their perspectives about our school system,” Rouble said. “It will give Yukon youth a voice in their education.”

Rouble will host the first Student Advisory Council Meeting on April 24 in Whitehorse. The theme for the meeting will be Your Education = Your Future.

Approximately 16 Grade 10 to12 Yukon students will be selected as council members to participate in three meetings per year. Members will have the option to attend meetings in person or via video conferencing. In addition to sharing their thoughts with the minister and one another, students will have the opportunity to develop leadership and communication skills.

The selection process will be based on students completing their choice of a one-page essay, a three-minute PowerPoint presentation, or a video that completes the sentence: “If I were the Minister of Education, I would …”

Application packages, complete with consent forms, must be submitted to the Department of Education by March 27 and selected participants will be contacted by April 6.
