WHITEHORSE – A new program called Leaders in Education / Innovation Fund has been announced by Education Minister Patrick Rouble.
“I am pleased that our government has set aside $75,000, subject to legislative approval, to establish the Leaders in Education / Innovation Fund,” Rouble said. “This initiative is part of implementing New Horizons: Our Commitment to the Future, and is an excellent example of how supporting the innovation of teachers and the school community can bring forward good ideas and translate them into best practices for our Yukon students.”
The purpose of the fund is to provide financial support to innovative educators by investing in original projects, led by teachers and community based teams, which can then be shared with other schools. This will encourage pilot projects to move from conceptual ideas, to best practices to common practice.
This fund will also support the enhancement of the School Growth Planning Process. Teachers, administrators, school boards, councils and committees with innovative education projects are eligible for funding. Proposals will need to demonstrate that they support student learning and the goals contained within school growth plans.
The fund will be proposal driven and the School Growth Planning Advisory Committee will review and select projects for the 2009/10 school year. This committee is made up of representatives from Yukon Teachers’ Association, Association of Yukon School Administrators, Yukon Association of School Councils, Boards and Committees, Catholic Educators’ Association, Commission scolaire francophone du Yukon, Yukon First Nation Education Advisory Committee and the Department of Education.
