WHITEHORSE - The Government of Yukon and the Council of Yukon First Nations (CYFN) have concluded their joint consultation on the draft Corrections Act, Minister of Justice Marian C. Horne announced today.
The Yukon government and CYFN have heard from hundreds of Yukoners since consultation started in December, 2007.
“I am particularly pleased with the response of Yukon First Nations to the draft Act and regulations,” Horne said. “Yukon government provided opportunities for First Nations and the public to be involved in this process and this involvement will result in a better corrections system.”
“The Act will reflect the important role that First Nations will have in steering corrections now and in the future,” Andy Carvill, Grand Chief of CYFN said. “Completing an Act that is responsive to the needs of First Nations clients is an important first step in modernizing Yukon’s correctional system.”
