Energy Strategy Identifies Yukon’s Vision and Priorities

WHITEHORSE – Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources Brad Cathers has released the Energy Strategy for Yukon, a long-term vision for responsible development and management of energy resources to meet Yukon’s needs.

“The energy strategy will guide energy policies, economic development in the energy sector, and energy efficiency programs,” Cathers said. “The Energy Strategy for Yukon is a vision for meeting our current and future energy needs, including reducing environmental impacts and minimizing energy costs.”

The energy strategy addresses priority energy issues, including:

• conserving energy and using it more efficiently;
• increasing the supply and use of renewable energy;
• meeting Yukon’s current and future electricity needs; and
• managing responsible oil and gas development.

Development of the strategy included energy sector research, a public workshop and extensive consultation involving First Nations, stakeholders and the public.

“The Energy Strategy for Yukon identifies opportunities and priorities for actions that improve Yukoners’ access to reliable, affordable energy,” noted Cathers.
