Yukon Government Continues to Support Yukon’s Music Industry

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon government’s Film & Sound Commission is awarding $24,366 in funding to seven Yukon artists through the Yukon Sound Recording Program.

“This program continues to build and sustain Yukon’s arts and culture industry,” Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon said. “More and more Yukon artists are expanding their careers and taking their product to new markets.”

One of the applicants, Blue Star Productions, is receiving $4,974 in funding that will go towards the cost of recording a full-length album featuring the Twisters.

“Northern blues recording artists, the Twisters are a roots band specializing in American music, doing everything from blues, gospel, reggae and funk to psychedelic-a-billy,” Blue Star Productions owner Chris Isaak said. “The band consists of musicians from both Yukon and B.C. and are recording their second album at Blue Star Studios here in Whitehorse. It’s so nice to have the funding and support from organizations like the Film & Sound Commission – we couldn’t do it without them.

Another successful applicant, Michael Brooks, will receive $2,000 in funding to produce a professional demo recording.

“I am most known in Yukon as a children’s artist and I am hoping that this new demo recording will lead to a second full-length CD that will be geared towards children in the four to six age group,” Brooks said. “For me it’s about using music in order to educate children, stimulate their imaginations and also make learning fun. I hope to field test this new demo in Yukon schools to get feedback from students and teachers.”
