Northern Strategy Trust Funding to Assist Boards and Committees

WHITEHORSE – Education Minister Patrick Rouble is pleased to announce $405,000 in new funding to the year 2010, flowing through the Northern Strategy Trust Fund to Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in.

The funding is for provision of Board and Committee Leadership Training Services. The Yukon Volunteer Bureau will deliver the program with regular input, direction and oversight from Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in.

“With this funding, we are investing in our authorities and other community leaders to ensure they can continually improve their capacity to do their important work in leading our communities,” Rouble said. “This will help improve the quality of life for all Yukoners.”

The project will support and develop capacity for members of governments and community organizations. The Yukon Volunteer Bureau will develop and implement one-on-one mentoring, coaching, facilitation, training and educational workshops for between 30 and 50 First Nation, non-First nation, organization and joint governance boards and committees, school boards, councils and committees throughout Yukon.

“This is a partnership in which the First Nation and the Yukon government are working with a non-profit agency, the Yukon Volunteer Bureau, to deliver service to Yukon communities,” Gary Wilson, the director of Business Development and Strategic Initiatives with Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in said. “These kinds of projects and partnerships build stronger communities and working relationships for the benefit of all Yukoners.”

“Training for boards and committees is a high priority,” Yukon Volunteer Bureau President Ron Pond said. “It helps people know their roles and how to operate as a team, interact with staff, other board or committee members and volunteers. It helps organizations work effectively and efficiently. When people are better informed and educated, they can enjoy their work more and do their work better.”
