National Forest Week Highlights Boreal Forest
WHITEHORSE - Yukon's National Forest Week events hosted by the Energy, Mines and Resources, Forest Management Branch will begin at the Lion's Trade Show in Whitehorse and continue throughout the week of May 1-7 with activities in Whitehorse and Haines Junction.
"Our forests are one of the Yukon's truly visible natural resources. They provide breath-taking scenery, economic opportunities for tourism, outfitting and forestry and they play a vital role in First Nations culture and history," Archie Lang, minister of Energy, Mines and Resources said.
"This year's National Forest Week theme allows us to appreciate the role of Yukon's boreal forests through a range of events."
Beginning Tuesday, May 3, forest experts from the Forest Management Branch will offer a series of lunchtime presentations in the foyer of the Elijah Smith Building in Whitehorse. The workshop topics are forest health and the spruce beetle, timber planning and forest management, reforestation and forest trivia, and environmental assessments and the permitting process.
Other activities include colouring contests in the local newspaper and teaching aids for children in schools. The Champagne and Aishihik First Nation is also sponsoring a poster and essay contest in Haines Junction to recognize National Forest Week and the progress they have made on implementing the forest management plan for their traditional territory.
"We have been the managers of our forests for two short years since devolution," Lang said. "We can be proud of the progress we have made towards developing our own Yukon forest legislation and revitalizing the Yukon's forest industry."
"I invite everyone to visit the Energy, Mines and Resources display at Mt. McIntyre at this weekend's Lion's Trade Show to learn more about Yukon's resource sectors including forestry, mining, and oil and gas and pipeline, agriculture, energy, geology and lands."
