Lang To Put Forward Yukon Pipeline Interests In Ottawa
WHITEHORSE - Energy, Mines and Resources Minister Archie Lang will be in Ottawa next week to press the federal government for regulatory certainty for the Alaska Highway Pipeline, and to support the Aboriginal Pipeline Coalition's bid for federal funding.
Lang plans to follow up on some of the key issues Premier Denis Fentie and Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski brought forward during their trip to Ottawa in February.
"We are keeping the heat on in Ottawa with respect to the Alaska Highway Pipeline and Yukon's interests," Lang said.
"We believe it is the Government of Canada's responsibility to lend substantial financial support to First Nations – as they did in the Northwest Territories. We continue to support the coalition's request for federal funding so that they may play an integral role in planning for an effective review process."
The Aboriginal Pipeline Coalition represents Yukon First Nations along the Alaska Highway corridor. They will act as a coordinating body to address common issues related to the proposed pipeline such as the regulatory framework, environmental issues, socio-economic issues, and revenue sharing mechanisms.
In addition to pipeline interests, Lang will meet with the parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to discuss the implementation of a new placer regime by 2007.
The new regime is a result of an agreement signed in May 2003 between the Yukon government, the Council of Yukon First Nations, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada to develop a regime that recognizes the importance of a sustainable placer industry to the Yukon and the importance of conservation of fish habitat supporting fisheries.
